Mariah Boat Cleat

This working prototype was the second result of a project sponsored by Mariah Boat company. The company was interested in designing a cleat for its new line of premium speed boats.

My concept was focused on versatility. My research into cleating knots revealed that a variety of knots were typically used in conjunction with boating cleats. My design was created to accomodate all three types in the most secure fashion. The lobes on the ends add a stylistic element to the design, and the center lobes are there to more securely attach a figure-8 knot.

Early designs generated using CAD software were considered before settling on this design. The final model was actually crafted in wax and then cast in silicon-aluminum using plaster and the lost-wax casting technique.
