Gunlocke

Gunlocke furniture company sponsored this project. The objective was fairly open ended, they were looking for concepts to implement mobile furniture that would transform to increase functionality.

My solution was a mobile computer workstation. This concept is a self-contained computer workstation. It would bring the versitility and expandable benefits of a desktop workstation with mobility similar to that of a laptop. Additionally, the workstation when closed would provide additional secutiry with a simple and complete key lock. The keyboard would also pivot and slide into an area within the unit. The monitor was suspended over the desktop and mounted on a mechanical assembly that allowed positioning anywhere on the X, Y plane. The monitor stand could also rotate to face any position. The CPU, printer, and storage space could all be stored within the base of the unit. The desktop surface- available when expanded by virtue of the hanging monitor arrangement, folded down to form the front of the stored unit. The physical mobility of the unit was provided by four caster wheels, and two retractable cords for power and connection to a phone line.

This 1/4" scale model was built using maple laminated plywood, ball bearings and mechanical accessories for the top, and ball bearing steel drawer slides mounted vertically to support the top.
